Abstract Every part of an object that rolls on a surface has a different speed and moves in a different direction. It is convenient but not necessary to describe the motion in terms of pure rotation plus pure translation. The resulting kinetic energy can also be calculated by summing the kinetic energy of every individual part of the object. Such a calculation is presented for a bicycle wheel to show that it can be done and gives the same answer.
