Reviews the basic principles and thermodynamics of fuel cells and discusses practical examples and applications. Considerable progress has been made in applying basic knowledge to the development of practical fuel cell systems, at present the high capital cost and low long-term reliability, due mainly to problems of electrode kinetics and construction materials, are delaying the full commercial development of fuel cells.
