On the publication of this book, in German in 1935 and in translation into English in 1950, it rapidly became established as an important source book and as a useful experimental handbook. It is now regarded as a classic and in considering its reissue the question is not whether it is a good book — a generation of research workers have agreed that it is, in spite of defects in translation — but what purpose is served by reissuing it 18 years after it first appeared in the English language ?
