Abstract A presumably stromateoid fish (Percomorpha), Uylyakushlyukia danatensis gen. et sp. nov., is described based on the complete skeleton from the fish-bearing layer of the Danata Formation (Lower Ypresian, Basal Eocene), Turkmenistan (Uylya-Kushlyuk locality). According to some available characters (small teeth, spineless opercle, high first dorsal fin, widely spaced rays in the dorsal and anal fins) Uylyakushlyukia gen. nov. is similar to the stromateoid families Nomeidae and Ariommatidae, but it has a lower number of vertebrae (24 vs at least 28 in these families). The autapomorphies of the new genus are hypurostegy at the base of the caudal fin, which is not typical for stromateoids, and a probable reduction to two in the number of supraneurals. The new taxon is left incertae sedis within the Stromateoidei. An overview of the fossil record of Stromateoidei is provided.
