Abstract

Abstract Data on the principal Cenozoic localities of marine bony fishes (represented by skeletal remains, not otoliths) from the territory of the development of the Tethys and Paratethys are presented. The historical development of many supra-generic taxa of the higher Teleostei (spiny-rayed) in the Cenozoic basins of the Tethys and Paratethys has been traced. The available paleontological data do not confirm the appearance of most lineages of “crown Acanthomorpha” (and even “crown Percomorpha”) already at the end of the Cretaceous, as indicated by the time-calibrated molecular phylogeny.
