A compendium of the genus Acanthobothrium is presented, including figures from the literature. The present analysis yields 44 valid species. These are: aetiobatis, australis, batailloni, benedeni, bengalense, brachyacanthum, brevissime, cestracii, coronatum, crassicolle, dasybati, duiardini, floridensis, fogeli, gracile, heterodonti, hispidum, holorhini, ijimae, indicum, intermedium, latum, lilium, maculatum, magnum, mathiasi, micracantha, microcephalum, parviuncinatum, pearsoni, rajaebatis, rhinobati, rhynchobatidis, robustum, semnovesiculum, septentrionale, southwelli, tortum, triacis, urogymni, unilateralis, wedli, woodsholei, and zschokkei. All but five of these species are redescribed from the literature, and their hosts and localities indicated. A key to the valid species is presented. The arrangement of the genus is based in part on host and locality data, herein considered useful taxonomic characters. The genus Acanthobothrium van Beneden, 1849 (Tetraphyllidea: Onchobothriidae) has been rather confused. Baer (1948) revised the species of the genus and provided a key to those species he recognized as valid. This key was reproduced in Wardle and McLeod (1952). These latter authors recognized 15 species and provided a key to 12 of them. Yamaguti (1959) redefined the genus and listed 35 species. A few additional species have been described (Euzet, 1955, 1956; Robinson, 1959, 1965; Baer and Euzet, 1962; Williams, 1962) and the genus recently has been redefined (Goldstein, 1964). The literature has been confused for a number of reasons. Authors have on occasion listed species within the genus that are not even tetraphyllideans (e.g., A. typicum in Yamaguti, 1959) or have considered a species (e.g., A. filicolle sensu Euzet, 1956) to consist of several varieties. The host species or genus has often been considered not to be of taxonomic value, although highly variable characters were used in constructing keys (e.g., total length in Baer, 1948). Acanthobothrium is obviously due for a reappraisal. In an effort to clarify the taxonomy of this genus, I have collected all the literature which presents figures or other data. The plates contain the illustrations from the previous literature.
