Abstract

Aims : To determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia in a cohort of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus and to study food intake and nu- tritional status of this population in order to iden- tify risk factors of dyslipidemia. Methods : It was a prospective, longitudinal study including children-adolescents followed for type1 diabetes. Dyslipidemia was defined according to the guidelines of the “National Cholesterol Edu- cation Program” based on data from the “National Heart Lung and Blood Institute” of 2012. A dietary survey was carried out. A multivariate analysis was performed to identify risk factors for dyslipidemia. Results : We analyzed the data of 112 children-ado- lescents aged between eight and 18 years. Under- nutrition was noted in 18. 8% of cases. No patient was obese. The glycemic control was good, mo- derate, and poor respectively in 21. 4%, 25. 9% and 52. 7% of the patients. The prevalence of dyslipi- demia was 42%. The main lipid abnormality found was isolated hypertriglyceridemia (49%). We have identified four risk factors for dyslipidemia in child- ren-adolescents: Previous borderline abnormalities of the lipid test (ORaj=6. 08 95% CI [1. 00–46. 50]), Waist-to-Height Ratio ≥0. 5 (ORaj=2. 16 95% CI [1. 00–10. 49]), daily dietary fat intake >72. 2g/24h (ORaj=4. 38 95% CI [1. 05–20. 20]) and poor glyce- mic balance (ORaj=5. 80 95% CI [1. 00–58. 78]). Conclusion : The prevalence of dyslipidemia in our cohort was high. This proves the importance of systematic screening of lipid test abnormalities in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
