Bone loss associated with periodontal disease presents substantial clinical challenges. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) offer regenerative potential due to their osteogenic differentiation and immunomodulatory capacity. However, their therapeutic effect is limited by low survival and retention post-implantation. Hydrogels, mimicking the extracellular matrix, provide structural and biochemical support to enhance PDLSC delivery and bone regeneration. This systematic review aims to synthesize current evidence on the efficacy of hydrogels as delivery systems for PDLSCs in animal models of bone defects. Based on that, we aim to systematically assess in vivo studies investigating the use of hydrogels as carriers for PDLSCs in bone defect regeneration in animal models.
