Abstract Consider the set of equations modeling the motion of a rigid body enclosed in sea ice. Using Hibler’s viscous-plastic model for describing sea ice, it is shown by a certain decoupling approach that this system admits a unique, local strong solution within the \textrmLp <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msup> <mml:mtext>L</mml:mtext> <mml:mi>p</mml:mi> </mml:msup> </mml:math> -setting.
