Summary This paper deals with the composition and geographical distribution of the Benue river basin ichthyofauna. A checklist is given for Lower Benue river fishes which is based almost entirely on museum registered specimens. This list comprises about 128 species representing 64 genera, 28 families and 11 orders. Neozoological and paleogeographical explanations for the distribution of certain species are discussed. A considerable amount of pertinent ecological and general biological information is included in the text.
