Introduction: motor imagery (MI) is considered a state mental sound during which the representation of a certain act or motor movement is rehearsed in memory of work without there being any production visible engine. Objectives: to map the available evidence on the role of IM in basketball at all levels of specialization and identify the main instruments and measures used to evaluate results. Materials and methods: searches were carried out in databases and 14 studies were selected that addressed the role of IM in basketball. The inclusion criteria were original studies published in Spanish, English and Portuguese, about the role of IM in basketball, in samples of any age, gender and skill level, for any purpose. Results: IM practice in basketball had a significant impact on performance of athletes, especially in specific tasks, such as free throw. The adoption of a well-structured methodology conducive to expanding the field of vision on studies of the last 6 years regarding the topic. Conclusion: the findings provide a solid basis for future investigations and highlight the importance of considering IM as a beneficial tool in improving basketball performance. The practice of MI can be an effective strategy to improve the performance of competitions in specific tasks and must be considered by coaches and athletes as a valuable tool in sports training.
