Abstract

This systematic review aims to synthesise and critically appraise the current evidence regarding the impact of high intensity hypoxic exercise as compared to normoxic (sea-level) training on various performance and physiological parameters in sprint athletes. The primary outcome sought is any performance adaptations related to hypoxic high-intensity interval training. Any potential performance benefits can then be utilised by sprinters and coaches to inform and optimise future training programs. The secondary outcomes the researchers are interested in are any physiological adaptations related to hypoxic high-intensity interval training. Significant physiological changes can be interpreted by scientists to explain mechanisms behind potential performance improvements and therefore improve understanding of the adaptations to hypoxic high-intensity interval training. This research aims to understand the effects of all types of hypoxic high intensity intermittent training on trained sprinters of any demographic. Middle to long distance runners and any other type of athlete will be excluded from the review. Studies in both the field and laboratory settings at any location will be included.
