Abstract

Main Advisor Praveenkumar Thaloor Ramesh /Assistant Professor/ ABSTRACT Increase wastage of materials in developing countries is one of the results of increasing growth rate of the countries. Due to poor waste management with in the speedy growth of construction sector in Ethiopia, construction material wastage has affect the economy, environment and society and it requires adequate material waste management strategy. As construction materials constitute large portions of the total building project. Among these construction material concrete is most widely used due to its unique benefits compared to other materials. Most scholars identifies that Contractors face the challenges of financial difficulty due to the extreme amount of material wastage in construction projects, this makes the study of concrete and concrete making material wastage is very important. So the objective of this study is to identify the cause and its extent with possible measure to reduce wastage of concrete on selected public building construction project, that build under the control of Addis Ababa city administration construction bureau. Questionnaire surveys, Face to-face interviews, Observation (site visit) and reviews of previous studies and related literature were employed to gather primary and secondary data for this study. The result of the research found out the top cause of concrete and concrete making material wastage are; Improper handling of materials, Using excessive quantity of materials than required and over production, Poor site layout and untidy construction site, Whether conditions, Poor workmanship and damage caused by workers due to lack of experience. The research also assessed the response of contractor professionals on the estimated percentage of wastage of concrete and concrete making materials. The finding shows that the magnitude of wastage of sand with mean score value of 16.21% had the highest value, cement (15.95%), Concrete (15.77%) and Aggregates (15.63%) had least mean percentage value. Finally, the finding identifies, the major waste minimization measures, from these; using low waste building technologies like ready mix and machine spray plastering, Design for offsite construction, Proper storage and handling of materials, Accurate measurement of materials during batching and Just in time operations are top five. Keywords: Concrete, concrete making material, wastage, Waste minimization measure, cause of waste, magnitude of waste, Professionals, public building.
