Evaluation of the Bonding Effectiveness of Ion-Releasing and Conventional Resin Composites in Dental Restorations: A Systematic Review

Abstract

In contemporary adhesive dentistry, achieving optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes while preserving as much dental tissue as possible has become a priority. There is consistent scientific evidence in the literature regarding the excellent clinical performance of composite resin restorations, whose longevity is directly related to the formation of the hybrid layer (HL) (Van Meerbeek et al., 2020; Rodolpho et al., 2022). Advancements in restorative materials have driven the development of hybrid compositions that combine composite resins with glass ionomer cements (GICs). This strategy aims to integrate the advantages of composite resins, such as mechanical strength, aesthetics, and high adhesion, with the beneficial properties of GICs, including self-adhesiveness, moisture tolerance, and ion release (Klee et al., 2020). However, a specific gap remains in the literature regarding the bond strength of these hybrid materials, a critical factor for the clinical longevity of restorations particularly when compared to conventional composite resins. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review is to evaluate and compare, through the analysis of both in vitro and clinical studies, the bond strength of ion-releasing resin versus conventional resin composite.
