Within the European Union, the pig production tends to concentrate in specialized production areas and in larger and larger farms. A process of specialization and industrialization is going on. Efficiency and economies of scale and agglomeration are powerful drivers of change because giving undeniable economic benefits. This process leads to disconnect pigs and farmland despite this link is seen as positive for the resources economy and for the environment. However, instruments inciting to geographical decentralization have been proven to be efficient for other animal productions. But in absence of clear objectives and political commitments, they are not used for pig production, particularly by the European authorities.
