Research on reductive dearomatization of benzene ring via open-shell intermediates has brought about transformative advances over the past decade: traditional conditions have been optimized, and novel pathways such as electrochemical reduction, photocatalytic reduction, and radical-induced strategies have been pioneered. These findings facilitate a systematic mechanistic re-examination. This JOCSynopsis summarizes and analyzes the existing reaction mechanisms in this field, aiming to identify current research challenges and outline potential future directions.
