Α glass with acurately determined physical properties, especially electrical resistivity, transformation temperature and viscosity, is needed in the lamp industry for sealing and for lamp bases. Until now these properties have only been provided by a lead glass with about 22 % PbO, which required that measures be taken to reduce emission not by changing batch composition but only by adjusting operating parameters in the process. These improvements have been achieved by the introduction of electric melting and removal of dust from the waste gases with filter bags. Emission from lead glass tube manufacture can be significantly reduced by these measures; not only can the quantities of waste gas and carry-over be decreased but the thermal efficiency also improved significantly. Thus a step forward in environmental protection and technology can be achieved which also involves a decrease in costs and energy consumption; a saving of more than 25 % in the case of lead glass tubing manufacture.
