Abstract

Glasses from nine historical factories (forest glasses) in Eastern Bavaria have been investigated by means of mineralogical and chemical methods (polarizing microscope, hot-stage microscope, fluorescent x-ray analysis). The study was carried out in order to obtain data on a characterization and distinction, respectively, of the glasses, on used raw materials and melting processes. It was of further interest whether the results provide information on different ages of manufacturing. On the basis of the System CaO-K2O-Na2O four different silicate glass types can be distinguished. The concentrations of trace elements are partly characteristic for individual groups. The contents of the oxides of potassium, phosphorous, manganese on one hand and of sodium on the other point out raw materials, which can be attached to different old preparation methods. This is supported by the melting points, which depend on the chemical composition.
