Abstract

An open, vectorized closed-form solver for the 3D curve-hold-curve (circle-line-circle) point-to-target problem in directional-drilling trajectory planning. Reports and corrects a transcription error in the printed eliminated polynomial of Sawaryn (2021, SPE-204111-PA); gives a batched all-roots implementation that selects the minimum-measured-depth path; integrates it into welleng as the Connector's curve-hold-curve solver; and adds a batched radius sweep (design radius, or independent R1/R2) that maps the feasible-radius trade-off, recovers the maximum usable radius, and exposes an easily-overlooked hazard where a larger arc radius can remove the drillable path. Use requires citation of this work, welleng, and Sawaryn (2021).
