Abstract

Evidence exists for at least one large tsunami affecting northern New Zealand around the 15th Century. Numerical modelling of potential volcanic and seismic sources in the Southwest Pacific was used to constrain potential source regions and assess likely frequency-magnitude relationships. A volcanic source is considered the most credible mechanism, suggesting a lower frequency of occurrence and longer response time than assumed for the alternative seismic source.
