Abstract The author attempts to portray some of the many facets of E. H. Thompson: soldier and scholar; scientist and connoisseur of the arts; inventor and teacher. A final assessment of this great photogrammetrist must await the passage of time. Résumé On tente ici de donner une idée du personnage à multiples facettes que fut E. H. Thompson: soldat et homme de pensée; savant et amateur d'art; créateur et enseignant. Mais il est encore trop tot pour dresser le bilan de ce que lui doit la photogrammétrie. Zusammenfassung Der Autor versucht, einige der vielen Charakterzüge von E. H. Thompson zu skizzieren; Soldat und Schüler, Wissenschaftler und Kenner der Künste, Erfinder und Lehrer. Eine abschliessende Würdigung dieses grossen Photogrammeters muss der Folgezeit überlassen werden.
