The authors study the problem of obtaining observationally favored de Sitter vacua (i.e. a positive cosmological constant) in string theory and show that the standard construction (``KKLT'') fails in general. Generalizing ideas from cosmological inflation to ten dimensions provides additional conditions, such that in these cases the KKLT-construction leads to stable de Sitter vacua.
