This essay by one of Jack Smith's former collaborators combines accounts and analyses of the artist's working methods with philosophical perspectives on the notion of the homeless object. Expanding on Austrian philosopher Alexius Meinong's theory of objects and non-existent entities, the author links Smith's imaginative and transformative relationship to reality to an ongoing tension between utopianism and art's technological limits. Filled with new insight into some of Smith's arcane art projects and terminology, the essay brings philosophical substance to bear on Smith's utopianism.
