Abstract Among figures that have been linked to the persona of Maitreya, the teaching Buddha to come, the Indian born spiritual teacher Jiddu Krishnamurti presents us with a particularly compelling case. This chapter examines Krishnamurti’s remarkable childhood and early adulthood against the backdrop of the Buddhist configurations of the Theosophical Society, the organization that chose and groomed the boy to be the next World Teacher. Krishnamurti’s seeming rejection of his role, along with his subsequent body of teachings, provide a framework for an inquiry into religious upbringings and whether freedom from such conditioning – an essential feature of his message -- is possible.
