Abstract

Abstract Applying AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the effect of a constant magnetic field <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> </mml:math> on the drag force associated with a heavy quark moving through a strongly-coupled <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>4</mml:mn> </mml:math> supersymmetric Yang–Mills plasma. The quark is considered moving transverse and parallel to <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> </mml:math> . It is shown that for transverse case, the drag force is linearly dependent on <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> </mml:math> in all regions, while for parallel case, the drag force increases monotonously with increasing <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> </mml:math> and also reveals a linear behavior in the regions of strong <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> </mml:math> . In addition, we find that <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mi mathvariant="italic"></mml:mi> </mml:math> has a more important effect in the transverse case than for the parallel.
