Abstract

This is an introduction to “The New German Art History”, which developed in (West) Germany from the 1970s onwards. David Craven presents an overview of the innovative phases of art historical practices, from the “ideological critique” of the 1970s to the “Warburg Renaissance” of the 1980s and the Bildwissenschaft (The Analysis of Visual Images) of the 1990s. Craven discusses key figures in German art history, including Martin Warnke, Berthold Hinz, Franz-Joachim Verspohl, Hans Belting, Gottfried Boehm, Horst Bredekamp and others.
