A Gallic tribe from a parent stock that in Caesar's time inhabited the Seine basin (Caes.BGall. 2. 2 etc. ). The tradition (Livy 5. 34. 5) that they were the last Gauls to settle in Italy is to be resisted on archaeological grounds. Here they ousted the *Umbrians on the Adriatic coast between *Ariminum and *Ancona, the ager Gallicus of historical times. They are said to have led the Gallic band that captured Rome in 390 bce. Thereafter Senones remained a constant menace for 100 years until Rome subjugated them in 283 (Polyb. 2. 17 f.; Diod. Sic. 14. 113 f.; Livy 5. 35). They then disappeared from Italy, being either expelled or massacred. Their territory was used partly for colonies (Sena, Ariminum), partly for the allotments which C. *Flaminius assigned to individual Roman citizens in 232.
