Summary This paper considers the cultic role of the Phoenician mother of King Eshmunazor (KAI 14) as a priest of Astarte, first by comparing the fairly rich body of evidence for women religious functionaries that comes from elsewhere in the Phoenician world and then by contrasting the almost complete lack of evidence for women priests in other Syro- Canaanite communities. These data are then assessed in order to indicate conditions that might have facilitated women’s religious leadership within the Phoenician world and also to suggest limitations that, even within the Phoenician sphere, may have been constrained women’s cultic functions.
