Abstract In a second wave of Greek settlement in southern Italy, colonists from Sybaris founded Poseidonia (the city's Greek name) at the end of the seventh century BCE on the western coast of Italy approximately 80 km southeast of Naples (Arist. Pol . 5.1303a). The colony's location afforded access to the fertile plain while maintaining vital contacts by sea and overland through the Lucanian hills. Strabo (5.4.13) reports that the colonists established a fortified base ( teichos ) on the sea before moving to another location inland.
