Smoke generated by textiles has a large potential for harm in fires and is implicated in hundreds of deaths annually in Canada. It can cause loss of vision, panic, irritation, and toxic damage. The smoke-generating propensity of textiles can be measured in small scale tests but it is not directly related to the potential for harm. The amount of smoke generated by the combustion of a textile in a real fire, the smoke potential, can be estimated, but the phenomenon of smoke maturation has yet to be addressed. Materials in textile form present several problems for smoke assessment in addition to those presented by materials in non-textile form.
