In recent decades psychoanalytic theory has undergone extensive changes. One aspect of these changes has been to make psychoanalysis more consistent with construc-tivist psychological theories, such as personal construct psychology (PCP). This paper examines several of the new currents in psychoanalytic theory from the perspective of their convergence with constructivist themes. Discussed are ideas of Al-wood and Stolorow (1984), Peterfreund (1983), Ryle (1982), Soldz (1986, 1987), and Weiss, Sampson, and the Mount Zion Psychotherapy Research Croup (1986). Similarities and differences in perspective between these psychoanalytic ideas and personal construct psychology are then discussed with the goal of furthering discussion between proponents of the rival theories
