This chapter presents an overview of the phonetic underpinnings of the language, including phonetic characteristics and segment inventories. After looking at some of the significant differences between the two major dialect areas, Northern Welsh and Southern Welsh, the chapter considers first consonants, including stops, affricates, fricatives, sonorants and glides. After looking at geminates, the chapter then considers vowels, monophthongs and diphthongs, along with vowel length, restrictions on vowel length, and Welsh schwa.
