Gaius Calpurnius Piso (1), was praetor urbanus 72 or 71 bce after acquittal on *ambitus charges. As consul 67 he opposed *Pompey's friends, the tribunes C. *Cornelius and A. *Gabinius (2), and disqualified M. *Lollius Palicanus from a consular candidature. Pre-empting Cornelius with the senate's support, he passed an ambitus law. Assigned both Gauls, he remained as proconsul until 65 (or later in Cisalpine Gaul) and, exercising his legal rights, impeded Pompey's recruitment. He defeated the *Allobroges and repressed trouble in *Transpadana. (For this he was unsuccessfully prosecuted by *Caesar, who had an interest in the area.) He supported Cicero against the Catilinarians (see sergius catilina, l.) and in 61 was called on to speak first in the senate by his kinsman M. *Pupius Piso, much to Cicero's chagrin. He is not heard of after 59.
