This paper describes a historical and pedagogical survey of siphon explanations through the literature of the nineteenth century up to the first half of the twentieth century. An amazing feature is emphasized that this old and humble device has shown some misunderstanding aspects. Corrections were made to this article on 11 April 2008. Changes were made to equations (5), (6), (7), (8) and (9) on pages 426 and 427. The corrected electronic version is identical to the print version.
