Abstract

Abstract Elongated calcareous concretions in sandstones of the fluvial Katberg Formation (Beaufort Group, South Africa) display a distinct preferred orientation that coincides with the regional paleoslope as deduced from cross-stratification and primary current lineations. These concretions formed after deposition of the sandstone but before the strata were affected by tectonic movement, presumably by groundwater flowing down the regional paleoslope. Similar sandstone-hosted concretions in other non-marine successions could potentially yield valuable information on paleo-groundwater flow and, by inference, depositional paleoslopes.
