Abstract Golay Codes are well‐known and important codes which play a role both in the theory of algebraic coding and in its applications. This article is devoted to a discussion of the basics regarding these codes. We will touch issues like constructions, decoding and relations to finite geometry and lattices. The presentation finishes with a discussion of the role of Golay codes in ring‐linear coding theory.
