Abstract This chapter tests the causal logics of the theory through an in-depth case study of religiously friendly democratization in Italy between 1945 and 1965. It considers the historical backdrop to the democratization process and then analyzes the evolution of the political religious movement in Italy, including the Italian Christian Democratic party (DC), the Vatican and Italian Catholic associations. It then studies the relationship of this evolution to the dramatic religious changes of the period. The analysis places particular emphasis on the dynamics leading to the Italian apertura a sinistraand the Second Vatican Council. The chapter employs some comparative evidence from France, Spain and Portugal to put the analysis of the chapter in relief.
