Why does dilute hydrofluoric acid–in contrast to the other hydrohalic acids–exhibit low acid strength? A recent explanation is based on the particularly strong H‐bonds, indicated by IR spectroscopy, in the ion‐pair H 3 O + · F − . This explanation now correlates results from X‐ray structure analyses: the compounds H 2 O · HF, H 2 O · 2HF, and H 2 O · 4HF, which melt between −36 and −100°C, are oxonium salts with very strong H‐bridges.
