Abstract

Following a method of Sherman Lehman we show that between <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="6.62 times 10 Superscript 370"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>6.62</mml:mn> <mml:mo>×<!-- × --></mml:mo> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:msup> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mn>370</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">6.62 × 10370</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> and <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="6.69 times 10 Superscript 370"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mn>6.69</mml:mn> <mml:mo>×<!-- × --></mml:mo> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:msup> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mn>370</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">6.69 × 10370</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> there are more than <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="10 Superscript 180"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:msup> <mml:mn>10</mml:mn> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mn>180</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">10180</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula> successive integers <italic>x</italic> for which <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="pi left-parenthesis x right-parenthesis minus li left-parenthesis x right-parenthesis greater-than 0"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>π<!-- π --></mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo> <mml:mo>−<!-- − --></mml:mo> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mtext>li</mml:mtext> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo> <mml:mo>></mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">π (x) - \text li(x) > 0</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </inline-formula>.
