Written during the most extreme emotional crisis in his life, Sir Leslie Stephen's Mausoleum Book is an attempt to conceal the writer's own worst fears from both himself and the world. An analysis of the pattern of concealment and evasion in the work suggests that Stephen was attempting to conceal from others and to control within himself his fears of hereditary insanity.
