The debate whether Scandinavian Bronze Age rock carvings were produced as single efforts or by repeated carving events is summarized. It is argued that recently discovered rock carvings at Dalbo, Norway, were produced continuously during a period of approximately 500–1,000 years. This local chronology is seen as having been connected with the position of the ship design as a powerful political symbol during the Scandinavian Bronze Age.
