It is worthy of note that despite the growing interest in Vermigli's life and thought, and in particular the undeniable importance of his short but highly productive Zurich period, the scholarly literature on this topic is extremely limited and a great many aspects are in need of illumination. This chapter focuses on a single, though decisive aspect of his career, namely his activity as 'divinarum literarum professor' in the Schola Tigurina . It addresses briefly Vermigli's contacts with Bullinger in the years 1542-1556, and provides an overview of his literary production during the Zurich period. The chapter then examines his writings, with particular attention to the commentaries in an attempt to understand more clearly his exegetical method and to identify some key theological topics emerging from his reading of Scripture.
