Some coins of a dynasty oflocal rulers in Sogdia, the Ikhshīds of Samarqand, issued in the late pre-Islamic period and in that of the Arab conquest of Transoxania (seventh and eighth centuries A.D.) are examined here. It is suggested that the depiction of these kings on their silver drachms involves a genuine attempt at individual portraiture rather than a formulaic image.
