Abstract The “Second” Triumvirate was an extraordinary magistracy whereby Antonius, Lepidus, and Octavianus jointly wielded consular power as a Board of Three Men tasked with reestablishing order in the Roman state. After they defeated Brutus and Cassius, the leading assassins of Gaius Julius Caesar, the three men split the government of the Roman Empire among them. However, rivalry among them was rife. Lepidus was relegated in 36 bce . In 31 bce , open warfare broke out between Antonius and Octavianus. Octavianus’ victory over Antonius at Actium allowed his eventual domination of the Roman world.
