THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE NOTION THAT SOME OF THE BASIC MODES of interaction in interactive art may be found within earlier, mechanical forms of interactive devices — namely, fortune-telling and vending machines. He also discusses the development of several of his own interactive artworks, with his observations on the ways in which audiences have responded to them.
