Abstract

Climate change mitigation is a key topic in the election campaign for the German Bundestag in 2021. The parties disagree on the role of hydrogen in the future energy system. Perfoming a qualitative content analysis, we worked out the main categories in which the party programmes of the parties differ regarding the use of hydrogen. While the far right rejects all efforts in developing a hydrogen economy, the left party and the green party restrict the use of hydrogen to certain use cases, color codes or origins. They regard hydrogen as a means toward climate neutrality. The green party stresses the relevance of hydrogen for Germany as an industry location. The social democrats are less precise than the before-mentioned. The Union parties and the Free Democratic Party do not pose comparable limits to the use of hydrogen. They consider hydrogen primarily as a means toward strengthening the national economy.
