This essay analyzes discourses around the controversial docudrama King (NBC, 1978), which portrayed Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement. A look at mainstream and black press coverage of the controversies surrounding King shows that the meaning of "history" and perceptions of why it mattered differed greatly along racial lines.
