Biopesticides: State of the Art and Future Opportunities

Abstract

The\nuse of biopesticides and related alternative management products\nis increasing. New tools, including semiochemicals and plant-incorporated\nprotectants (PIPs), as well as botanical and microbially derived chemicals,\nare playing an increasing role in pest management, along with plant\nand animal genetics, biological control, cultural methods, and newer\nsynthetics. The goal of this Perspective is to highlight promising\nnew biopesticide research and development (R&D), based upon recently\npublished work and that presented in the American Chemical Society\n(ACS) symposium “Biopesticides: State of the Art and Future\nOpportunities,” as well as the authors’ own perspectives.\nAlthough the focus is on biopesticides, included in this Perspective\nis progress with products exhibiting similar characteristics, namely\nthose naturally occurring or derived from natural products. These\nare target specific, of low toxicity to nontarget organisms, reduced\nin persistence in the environment, and potentially usable in organic\nagriculture. Progress is being made, illustrated by the number of\nbiopesticides and related products in the registration pipeline, yet\nmajor commercial opportunities exist for new bioherbicides and bionematicides,\nin part occasioned by the emergence of weeds resistant to glyphosate\nand the phase-out of methyl bromide. The emergence of entrepreneurial\nstart-up companies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)\nfast track for biopesticides, and the availability of funding for\nregistration-related R&D for biorational pesticides through the\nU.S. IR-4 program provide incentives for biopesticide development,\nbut an expanded effort is warranted both in the United States and\nworldwide to support this relatively nascent industry.
