In this article, we summarize our recent work aimed at elucidating the functional role of ribosomal components. This work is based on the recently developed technique of reconstitution of the 30 S ribosomal subunit. In the article following this one we shall discuss in more detail the mechanism of this in vitro self-assembly reaction and in the third article, we shall describe our studies of ribosome assembly in vivo.
