Protons are not fundamental particles but seem to be made of simpler elements called quarks. The evidence for this is given. But separated quarks have never been seen. A struggle to explain \nthis seeming paradox may be leading us to a clearer view of the precise laws of the proton's structure and other phenomena of high energy physics.
